NEWS & UPDATES
2026 situation: key facts and the latest articles from international press.
Record year across Europe
The ECDC confirms 2026 is the most active year in Europe since 2010. Germany has exceeded 2,500 Puumala cases, with Finland and Sweden reporting 30% increases. Main cause: a record beech mast year in 2025 triggered an explosion in bank vole populations.
Active clusters — Andes virus under surveillance
Argentina and Brazil account for the majority of global mortality in 2026. The Andes virus — the only hantavirus known to spread person-to-person — is behind 3 confirmed clusters in Río Negro Province. PAHO is coordinating the on-ground response.
China & Russia account for 48% of global cases
With 9,870 cases in China and 5,641 in Russia, Asia-Pacific remains the global epicenter of hantavirus. WHO has reinforced surveillance recommendations in Southeast Asia following an 18% increase in reports since January 2026.
WHAT IS HANTAVIRUS?
Hantavirus is an RNA virus transmitted by rodents — primarily the deer mouse in the Americas and the bank vole in Europe. Transmission occurs through inhalation of dust contaminated with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. It does not spread through food, water, or casual human contact.
Early phase (1–5 days)
- ›Sudden high fever
- ›Intense muscle pain
- ›Severe headaches
- ›Extreme fatigue
- ›Nausea / vomiting
Pulmonary phase — HPS (Americas)
- ›Persistent dry cough
- ›Progressive shortness of breath
- ›Fluid filling in lungs
- ›Possible respiratory failure
- ›Fatality rate: 35–40%
Renal phase — HFRS (Europe / Asia)
- ›Lower back pain
- ›Acute kidney failure
- ›Unstable blood pressure
- ›Edema
- ›Fatality rate: 1–5%
PROTECTION & PREVENTION
No vaccine exists against hantavirus in Europe or the Americas. Prevention remains the only effective protection.
Avoid rodents
Do not touch live or dead rodents, their droppings, urine, or nests. Use gloves if necessary.
Ventilate before entering
Before entering a long-unoccupied enclosed space (cabin, shed), open windows for 30 minutes to air it out.
Clean wet, never dry
Never sweep dry or blow with compressed air. Use diluted bleach (1:10) and damp cloths to clean contaminated surfaces.
Camping & hiking
Avoid sleeping directly on the ground. Store food in airtight containers. Avoid areas known to be infested.
Secure your home
Seal all cracks (>6mm). Use traps. Do not store food or waste accessible to rodents.
If exposed: seek care
If you develop fever and muscle pain after a possible exposure, seek emergency care immediately. Explicitly mention hantavirus risk.
⚠ What to do if you think you've been exposed?
- 1.Note the date and nature of the exposure (infested area, rodent contact, etc.)
- 2.Consult a doctor or emergency room within 24–48 hours — do not wait for symptoms to appear
- 3.Inform the healthcare provider of the potential hantavirus exposure
- 4.If symptoms appear: fever, muscle pain, shortness of breath → call emergency services immediately
- 5.Do not drive alone if you feel unwell — HPS can progress very rapidly

GLOBAL ALERT LEVEL
MODERATE
Seasonal surge — Central Europe
ECDC reports an increase in Puumala hantavirus cases across Germany, Finland, and Sweden. The winter peak of bank vole populations is amplifying transmission risk.
Active cluster — Río Negro Province, Argentina
Argentine health authorities confirm 3 new grouped HPS cases in Río Negro Province. PAHO teams are deployed on the ground for epidemiological investigation.
Enhanced surveillance — Northeast China
China's NHC maintains heightened surveillance in Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces due to historically high Hantaan virus activity during this period.
New study — Puumala vaccine in Phase II
Finnish researchers publish encouraging results for a Puumala hantavirus vaccine candidate. Phase II is ongoing with 400 volunteers. Results expected late 2026.
